NFL Week 2 Power Rankings: Saints, Steelers soar after surprising openers, Packers take a major plunge

Published

on

The uncertainty of the NFL shows up every season, but to see five of the top 10 teams in my first Power Rankings go down in Week 1 is really disconcerting. There were two teams in the top five.

The No. The No. 2 team at the weekend was Buffalo Bills, which I picked to win Super Bowl. They are now 0-1 following a disappointing loss at home to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The No. The No. 4 team in the league was the Green Bay Packers. Their loss to the New Orleans Saints was even more devastating, and the offense looked stale with Aaron Rodgers.

It’s only one week, and we tend not to react to the first week. However, the openers for these two teams are certainly not what many expected.

There were impressive Week 1 performances, with the Saints leading the pack. I was also impressed by Arizona’s sweeping victory against a solid Tennessee Titans side-by side and Seattle’s road win over the Indianapolis Colts.

This week’s rankings saw a lot of movement, with the Cardinals in the sixth spot and Saints in the seventh. Seattle, which I might have underrated to begin the season makes a huge jump from the 18th to the No. 9.

There was also a shakeup at bottom. The Jacksonville Jaguars are currently at the bottom, having looked terrible in their loss against the Houston Texans. Urban Meyer’s NFL debut was much worse than the one we saw at college. The Jaguars were lifeless and filled with mistakes.

This is only one game, so don’t overanalyze it. The concerns of many teams were evident the first game. Although Buffalo and Green Bay will be able to fix their problems, it’s not worth worrying about the teams at the bottom.

Although the Jaguars won their first home game against the Colts last year, it was their only victory of this season. Could this mean that 16-1 will be coming this season? They aren’t going to win, but they aren’t as bad as the Texans. The teams that won in Week one probably aren’t as good.

So don’t overreact. I won’t — even if my first top 10 was blown up after just one game for each team.

Buccaneers
The offense is going to be special this season, but the defense had some rough moments against the Cowboys. They must be better than that to avoid a Super Bowl repeat. 1-0-0

2
team logo
Chiefs
Patrick Mahomes rallied the Chiefs against the Browns, but the defense has to be better. They were sometimes pushed around. 1 1-0-0

3
team logo
49ers
They jumped all over the Lions, but had to hold on to win for dear life. The defense needs to be more solid than what they showed against Detroit. 3 1-0-0

4
team logo
Rams
Matt Stafford showed in the opener that he will liven up the passing game for this Rams team with the deep shots. The defense played its usual strong self against the Bears. 4 1-0-0

5
team logo
Cardinals
If Kyler Murray plays like he did against the Titans this season, the Cardinals will be a Super Bowl contender. The defense impressed as well. 4 1-0-0

6
team logo
Saints
They had the most impressive victory of the weekend in blowing out the Packers. Aaron Rodgers was hampered by the defense, which was really impressive. 13 1-0-0

7
team logo
Steelers
Going on the road and beating the Bills was a heck of a day for the Steelers. The Steelers’ defense and special team won the game. This means that the offense must improve. 14 1-0-0

8
team logo
Seahawks
That was a nice showing on the road to open the season. 10 1-0-0

9
team logo
Bills
They can quiet the Super Bowl talk for a week after losing to the Steelers at home. 7 0-1-0

10
team logo
Packers
That was a terrible showing against the Saints. Aaron Rodgers seemed like a shell of his self, which is not good for a team that relies on him so much. 6 0-1-0

11
team logo
Ravens
Losing on the road on a Monday night isn’t a disgrace, but now they get the Chiefs on a short week. The injuries are becoming a problem. 4 0-1-0

12
team logo
Browns
They have to learn how to win the big games. This is the difference between Chiefs and Browns. 7 0-1-0

13
team logo
Broncos
The defense is going to carry this team early in the season, which we saw against the Giants. They now face Trevor Lawrence, a rookie quarterback who could help them go 2-0. 4 1-0-0

14
team logo
Dolphins
It wasn’t a thing of beauty beating New England, but that shouldn’t’ matter. They managed to score a road win, which is good news for the future. 1 1-0-0

15
team logo
Chargers
Winning on the road on the East Coast to open the season is a good look. The defense was much better than it was a year ago. 5 1-0-0

16
team logo
Raiders
It wasn’t always pretty, but they found a way to win a tough one Monday night against the Ravens. Although the offense is exciting to watch, it’s the defense that really won it. 9 1-0-0

17
team logo
Football Team
They lost Ryan Fitzpatrick in the opening loss to the Chargers, and he will be out for three weeks at least. This means Taylor Heinecke will be playing against the Giants on Thursday night. 4 0-1-0

18
team logo
Cowboys
The offense will be fun to watch as we saw in Tampa. This season’s outcome will depend on the defense. They didn’t do well against Tom Brady. 4 0-1-0

19
team logo
Titans
What was that against the Cardinals? They were embarrassed at their home. They were terrible on both sides. 9 0-1-0

20
team logo
Patriots
Mac Jones did some good things against Miami, but just not enough to win his first game. He will now travel to face the Jets in an easily winnable match. 9 0-1-0

21
team logo
Colts
The defense didn’t play well against Seattle, which has to be concerning as they ready to play a good Rams team this week. They won’t be able to go 0-2 home to start the season. 9 0-1-0

22
team logo
Eagles
The Jalen Hurts era is off to a great start. He was impressive in beating Falcons. This team could be a threat in the playoffs if this trend continues. 4 1-0-0

23
team logo
Panthers
They did some good things in beating the Jets, but they have to be better than that going forward. Christian McCaffrey must be back in charge of the football. 5 1-0-0

24
team logo
Bears
The offense isn’t good enough with Andy Dalton, who didn’t throw it down the field at all. Justin Fields will be taking over soon. 1 0-1-0

25
team logo
Bengals
That was a big overtime victory over the Vikings for this young group. Joe Burrow is now at ease after playing well in his first ever real game since his torn ACL. 4 1-0-0

26
team logo
Vikings
Losing on the road in an opener isn’t a disaster, but the defense let them down. They must be more efficient on the back end. The good news is that no one else in the division has won. 10 0-1-0

27
team logo
Giants
The heat is already on this front office and coaching staff. Joe Judge and his team were not pleased with the first game. They now have a week to make it right. 3 0-1-0

28
team logo
Texans
Give coach David Culley credit. He got his team through all of the offseason challenges and they beat out the Jaguars. They are currently in first place. Can you believe it? 4 1-0-0

29
team logo
Falcons
The defense had issues against the Eagles, which we expected. The offense must be more aggressive. Arthur Smith could face a long season as he begins his first year as a coach. 7 0-1-0

30
team logo
Lions
They made it interesting against the 49ers, but they are still an undermanned team. Dan Campbell, the first-year coach, is proud that they have fought back. 0-1-0

31
team logo
Jets
It took them a while to get Zach Wilson going, but he did some good things late. It is encouraging that they persevered and made it interesting late. 0-1-0

32
team logo
Jaguars
That was a terrible showing at Houston. The offense and defense are both terrible. Urban Meyer still has much to do. 5 0-1-0
