New England Patriots vs. New York Jets
Sunday, September 19, 2021 – 01:00 PM EDT at Metlife Stadium
How Did the Two Rookie QBs Do Last Week?
I will admit I was a little shocked that the Patriots released Cam Newton and announced that Mac Jones would start in week 1. The inevitable was going to happen, but Cam missed some preseason and Mac took it with both his hands. It was enough for Bill Belichick’s faith in Mac.
He didn’t do much wrong against a very good Dolphins defense and he was unlucky to be on the losing side after completing 29 of his 39 attempts for 281 yards, a TD and zero interceptions on debut. It’s not a terrible stat-line, but Damien Harris’s late interception cost the Dolphins the victory.
Zach Wilson’s time with the Jets began with a loss in Carolina after throwing 2 TDs to Corey Davis for their 14 points in the game. Wilson accounted 258 of their total 303 yards. Wilson failed to have any running game to relieve Wilson of the pressure. You would imagine they’d be looking to establish the run going forward but left tackle Mekhi Becton is going to be on the sidelines for a few weeks which will hurt them.
Can the Jets win a surprise victory?
Unsurprisingly the recent history between these teams is massively one-sided with the Patriots winning the last 10 in a row, but that was with Brady, and this is a new dawn for both teams in the North-East.
The spread line is under a touchdown though, so the bookies clearly think there’s a chance of the Jets being able to keep this game close at least. It’s a long way from when the Jets were 21 points underdogs just two years ago.
After coming over in free agency, it was expected that Corey Davis would be the WR1 of the teams. That proved to be true in the opener. This seems to be the game plan again with very little behind him. Last week, former-Patriot Braxton Birrios had the same number of targets as Davis.
The offensive line issues are a worry for them though with the inability to help Wilson out with any kind of game on the ground something that would hurt a lot of teams let alone one with a QB playing in his first few games.
Will There Be Another Under Involving Patriots?
The Patriots suffered a 16-17 defeat to the Dolphins, and even though they had more yards than expected, failed to score enough points to beat a tough opponent. They were very good on defense as you’d expect from a Belichick team and the returning players strengthened that area of the field.
However, the team suffered from a lack offensive talent and they spent more money than anyone else in free agent last year. They expect to get better returns this season than what they received in the first game. The likes of Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith both came in with good TD records and they’ll be hoping to get off the mark as soon as they can.
Lower scoring divisional games result from teams being familiar with each other and this will likely be the case in this game. Also, add to it the fact that Belichick has a great record against rookie quarterbacks and it could make for a very difficult night for Jets.
Do I pick the Patriots against either the spread or the under? It would be a win for the Pats of 24-7, 30-7 or more.
