Celebrities speak out after US anti-doping agency Sha’Carri Richardson suspended for a positive drug test.
USADA announced the suspension on Friday after a marijuana was found in its system, voiding Richardson’s performance at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon, where she won the women’s 100-meter run. The suspension will also prevent the 21-year-old from attending her signature event at the Tokyo Olympics later this month.
Richardson apologized on the NBC show “Today” Friday morning and assumed responsibility for the positive test.
“I know what I’ve done. I know what to do. I know what not to do, and I made that decision anyway,” she said.
Richardson said on the show that she used marijuana after an interview with a reporter in which the reporter informed her that her birth mother had died. She said it was severely emotional for her on the eve of her first Olympic trials, where she was considered a heavy favorite, and that it put her in an “emotional panic” state.
Celebrities like Seth Rogen, Gabrielle Union and Jonathan Van Ness hit social media on Friday sending love to Richardson while also calling the USADA’s decision “insane” and “stupid”.
Rogen, who owns his own cannabis company, said the decision was rooted “in racism” and “hate”.
“The idea that weed is a problematic ‘drug’ has its roots in racism”, Rogen wrote. “It’s crazy that Team USA is disqualifying one of the most talented athletes in this country because he thinks he’s rooted in hate. For that they should be ashamed of Joyner, a great Olympic runner of all time, whom Richardson has been compared to.
Former NFL player and interim host of “The Bachelor: After the Final Rose” Emmanuel Acho tweeted about both decisions.
“Suspending athletes for smoking weed in 2021 is stupid. It’s also stupid to smoke weed knowing you are going to have a drug test.” Acho wrote.
“To punish this incredible athlete for cannabis ??” “Queer Eye” style expert Jonathan Van Ness wrote. “We love you @itskerrii”
“I’m with Sha’Carri!” Billy Porter wrote.
Gabrielle Union showed her support Write: “LET IT RUN !!”
The former “Star Trek” star George Takei also showed his support. “Look, they found traces of THC in my blood once and they still let me pilot the Enterprise,” he said wrote.
“Marijuana is NOT a performance-enhancing drug”, wrote Professional ski and American Horror Story actor Gus Kenworthy.
Fox News personality Katherine Timf called out those who support Richardson’s suspension.
“Wrong by anyone who says Sha’Carri shouldn’t be able to compete because those are the rules,” she said wrote. “Okay, sure, but the rules here are irrational so let’s change them! Respecting the rules just because they are the rules makes you a (sheep).”
