If you’re like many hot dog lovers, you may feel like there’s nothing like Nathan’s. The only problem with a good hot dog is that you may feel like craving more. Be careful: since Nathan’s famous Hot Dog Eating Contest airs on July 4th this Sunday, we checked out Nathan’s Nutrition Facts to see how much Nathan’s is too much. We discovered one particular article by Nathan that is a no-go if you want to start some fireworks this summer by being fit. (Pow!)

For starters, it’s important to keep this in mind: A naked, bunless Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog is made from beef and is loaded with 140 calories and 13 grams of fat, along with the other nutritional information above. Delicious? Yes, for a lot of hot dog lovers … but if you choose to have a double dog, you could increase half your fat content for the day (since the Cleveland Clinic recommends most adults on a 2,000-calorie diet be between 44 and 77 grams of fat per person consumed a day). Be aware that like many hot dogs, Nathans contain saturated fat – which some health professionals say are more toxic than cholesterol.
Another rule of thumb in Nathan’s restaurants is that, contrary to what you might think, a skinless hot dog is about 70 more calories and five grams more fat than hot dogs listed as “natural casings”.
By the way, the name sounded like fat, sodium, and calories, we guessed Nathan’s worst hot dog would have been the Bacon Cheese Dog. It turned out we were wrong. The Skinless Bacon Cheese Dog contains 520 calories, 33 grams of fat, 12 grams of saturated fat, and 1,840 milligrams of sodium. That’s pretty hefty, along with the skinless Tex-Mex dog’s 770 calories and 50 grams of fat … but these are still not the worst.

Nathan’s worst hot dog isn’t technically a hot dog: it’s Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Nuggets. Topped with cornbread batter, these mini cornbread doughs are available at both Nathan’s Famous restaurant locations and grocery stores. Nathan’s nutritional information suggests that a 15-piece order of Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Nuggets weighs 870 calories, 66 grams of fat (14 grams of saturated fat), 1,000 milligrams of sodium, and 50 grams of carbohydrates. Definitely not an easy treat … luckily they come in nine and six-part sizes that subtract 350 and 500 calories, respectively.
